Paranormal Nonsense: Blue Moon Investigations Book 1
Steve Higgs
Crime
The genre should be Crime-comedy but no option to select that above. Tempest Michaels, a Paranormal Investigator by pure accident, sits reading a report by eyewitness Dr Bryson, a noted zoologist, about a Big Foot that has been spotted roaming the Kent Weald when he receives a text tipping him off about a third victim of a killer dubbed ‘The Vampire’. At the murder scene, he meets PC Amanda Harper whom he is immediately infatuated by. When his investigation leads him to respond to a client’s call for help he stumbles across a local vampire-wannabe club whereupon a fight breaks out. 'The Vampire' is the master of the club and both the club members and the killer himself believe he is a true vampire. Tempest’s interference causes the killer to target him and his family binging real jeopardy to his doorstep. With no client paying for this investigation he is motivated by the belief that a successful conclusion will bring press coverage to promote his business and please the alluring PC Harper but he must take on paying work at the same time. He investigates a Poltergeist haunting an old couple and tackles the Big Foot case when suddenly hired to do so following an accidental death. With several cases overlapping he calls for expert advice from Frank Decaux, the owner of a local occult bookshop. The bookshop assistant is Poison, a very attractive 19-year-old who is clearly interested in him. The client engaging him to investigate the Big Foot siting’s wants a result and gives him 3 days to deliver. PC Amanda Harper comes to his house early the next morning to report that there has been a double murder with the same puncture wound to the jugular. She wants to advance her career and plans to use him to help her solve the case in a bid to gain promotion. Tempest believes ‘The Vampire’ is just a man acting out a fantasy, but is he right? As Master of the vampire-wannabe club they pay him fealty and perform tasks for him to gain his favour and earn the right to be ‘turned’. A famous vampire slayer, Vermont Wensdale, appears to bring the beast down and offers a reward for information leading to its capture. Tempest learns that the vampire-wannabe club members may intend to do him or his family harm and approaches them only to find that the offered reward has caused a mob to form at their clubhouse. The clubhouse is on fire and a fight already in progress. Arrested in the ensuing confusion for the second time that week Tempest is released later that evening to find ‘The Vampire’ has attacked his parents. Picking up the investigation again the next day he discovers that Poison has been snatched by the vampire-wannabes and is to be murdered in a ritual to 'turn' them. Before he can pursue this however he is confronted by Vermont Wensdale and his associates who want him off the case. Now chasing for information and aided by PC Amanda Harper, Frank Decaux and a former Army colleague he joins the dots to find the crypt ‘The Vampire’ is using as a base. It is located in the grounds of a nearby privately owned castle. At the crypt, they meet the vampire-wannabe club again and endure a fight that they only survive by the timely arrival of Vermont Wensdale. The team are arrested once more by Police alerted to the site by Castle staff. Out of handcuffs, but with no sign of Poison or the vampire killer, he stumbles by accident across them both in the dark not far from the crypt. Another fight, this time against a seemingly impervious foe he survives only because Poison’s screams draw others. ‘The Vampire’ chooses to flee and is found dead not far away having run into a broken fence post that impales his chest. The stake through the heart is sufficient to perpetuate the beliefs of those who support the notion of the supernatural. In the fight, Tempest suffers a dreadful personal loss but is given no time to focus on his grief as a single clue seen earlier tips Tempest off to the identity of the Big Foot. When confronted, Dr Bryson confesses to dressing up as the Big Foot to promote a book. He tries to kill himself, almost taking Tempest out in the attempt. Tempest hands Dr Bryson over to PC Harper. Throughout the story Tempest Michaels is drawn to the attractive ladies around him such as PC Amanda Harper, Hayley from the coffee shop, Natasha the barmaid at his local pub and Poison the delightful assistant at the bookshop. To add to this his Mother, desperate for grandchildren, sets him up with an unsuitable blind date. Having had no luck for months, but now utterly confused by his sudden glut of choices, the story ends with the battered and bruised hero opening his door late one night to find a lady on his door step asking to be invited in. Entirely missing from the synopsis, which focusses on the storyline, is the comedy that runs throughout the book and is really the point of it all. The closest I can find to what I am doing is the work of Wilkie Martin or the bestseller Janet Evanovich.

Post Mortem - The Life and Labours of Will Franklin
James Davidson
Historical
Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect. But we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in to prevent them from leaving us.” John F Kennedy, Berlin 1963. It has taken time for the Green family to come to terms with the loss of Hannah Franklin. After such a turbulent period, scars remain, notably the ongoing legacy of Hitler’s diaries. While studying for his PhD, Alex discovers that the controversies in his family history do not stop at the Second World War. In 1962, as the Wall divides Berlin and the world faces nuclear destruction, it is clear that his Grandfather – Will Franklin, has a deep secret. Sergeant Franklin is appointed to ready Spandau Prison for the prisoners who will inhabit the decrepit building after the Nuremburg Trials. He is allocated to oversee the welfare of Number Seven - Rudolf Hess. Hess controls the transfer of information within Spandau Prison resulting in the spread of propaganda amongst Soviet and American staff - it feeds the animosity of the Cold War. The consequences are disastrous. As the Franklin family seek a simple life in London, the legacy of Hannah's story remains an ever present threat. In 1963, Will is duty bound to return to Berlin to end this ongoing threat to his family. As the Wall is dividing the city and the world faces nuclear destruction, Will is faced with the task of maintaining the secrets of his own family and at the same time, keep away from Soviet scrutiny and the ever present STASI. The memory of the Checkpoint Charlie implies that World War Three could begin in this city for the slightest misunderstanding. So, the prospect of Hitler's diaries being found in Berlin at this time could be catastrophic. James poses questions on the casualties of war, notably children. He states, "The greatest casualty of war is innocence." He tracks the lives of two feral children surviving on the rubble of the city. He also comments on the nature of warfare, echoing the sentiments of Orwell's '1984' in that war is a permanent feature of politics, the causes and consequences being mere afterthoughts. In the modern story, the two brothers begin a journey of reconciliation after a horrific series of events in 'Posthumous'. Alex pursues an academic route and begins a PhD on a critique of Hitler's diaries as a non-entity - a study in anti-history. Dalton pursues a similar career by joining the conspiracy community and perpetuates the heresies of the diaries. Their efforts to address the diaries should be an opportunity to rekindle their relationship. They are disappointed. As before, James Davidson plays with history and readers are challenged with the dilemma as to where the history ends and the counter factual premises begin. Likewise, as the historian depends on facts as the lifeblood of their studies, how can one disprove that these events did not actually happen. In a story based on secrets and misinformation, Davidson asks the reader to ask question this consideration. Perhaps what is most impressive is the manner in which the 'small man' can impact on the 'big men' when they are cornered. Will Franklin is a small man in a big man's world - he is admittedly out of his league, but his contribution to the Berlin body-politic is considerable. As if that were not enough, the story peaks at the moment when John F Kennedy visits Berlin to make his 'Ich bin ein Berliner' speech. This book continues the themes of 'Posthumous' with deftness and rigour. It questions historical methodology and poses controversial, if uncomfortable questions for the reader to consider. Perhaps the overriding thought is 'Can we trust what we know.'

The Universe From My Balcony
Sadi Sahar
Young Adult
A boy comes to India and becomes lost in the search for the meaning of existence. IDAS AVEST has spent all his life among books in his room, from which he has explored the universe, found its secrets, expressed his ideas, and spent nights reading about history. But when he travels to India to study, he faces something he has never read about in books. He faces existential angst, and from then on, he can no longer believe that knowledge is the answer. Overwhelmed by his strong angst about the human condition and the unjust distribution of joy, beauty, and chance among the people of the world, he withdraws into almost complete isolation. He restores some meaning in life, however, as he becomes familiar with the new culture, and makes friends in college who try to drag him away from his introspection. And, on a rare night out, iDas meets a young woman who is, at first glance, his complete opposite. SADEE GOHAR is beautiful and fashionable, shes always dressed in style and she can name every shade of green. Unlike iDas, she seems happy and sociable. But, just like him, she is searching for a larger meaning to life. And she realizes shes found it when she meets him. The unlikely pair begin a relationship, but iDas is unable to connect with her. Lost in his own thoughts, hes incapable of giving Sadee what she desperately needs: his eyes on hers. Having silently begged for his undivided attention, and long evenings spent together wishing he would really see her, Sadee eventually gives up hope of breaking into the heavily guarded walls he keeps around himself. And does the only thing she can: leaves him. His life seeming to sink further from the rest of humanity, iDas is persuaded by his friends to visit a psychiatrist, who diagnoses him with schizophrenia. iDas takes the medication, but struggles to accept his condition, claiming it disregards his thoughts and feelings as the delusions of a madman. Growing ever more desperate to resolve his existential crisis, he becomes obsessed with a new idea. He wants to be remembered for something after his name, so that the children of a thousand years will read about him in their books and see his picture and admire him, just like he admired Socrates, and Aristotle, and Buddha in his childhood and desired to be like them. This bare obsession leads to even greater isolation and loneliness, to the extent that he misses Sadee. And when their paths cross again, he is unable to deny the pull he feels toward her. Her feelings for him unchanged, they give their relationship another try, but iDas once again loses his anchor and, this time, he doubts the authenticity of psychology as a science. His doubt, however, leads him to the true nature of psychology, that it has no cure for schizophrenia. And so, he finally decides to leave the country and go back to the one place where he always had a meaning: his room. The story ends when iDas is at the airport, where he opens his notebook and writes this: I had made my room meaningful. From there, Id criticized this universe, found its secrets, celebrated life, discussed my knowing, counted my dreams, expressed my unhappiness, and spent countless nights reading books. Now that I had made life in that little room so meaningful and so colorful, what would happen if one day I came out again and decide to make the world a more meaningful place?

Fredi & Jake, a great friendship
Timothy L Rodriguez
Action
Fredi & Jake (working title) is a story of two young menone Puerto Rican (Fredi) and the other Mexican (Jake)who are caught up in the migrant flow, moving across the land from one crop to the next. The story opens in Homestead, Fla. where the tomato crop is about to be harvested. Both men work for a typical but nevertheless despicable crew leader named Cano. Fredi meets Jake when he rescues him from a barroom brawl. Fighting is a way of life; just ask Fredi who beats up his roommate, Angel, because Angel and his cronies ate Fredis pinto bean lunch. The trouble between Fredi and Angel escalates, but Cano cannot afford to lose Fredi because he is an excellent picker. Those in his crew earn 32 cents per 30 pound bucket of tomatoes. Within a few weeks union leaders come into the fields and organize a strike, seeking 45 cents a bucket. All the crew leaders but Cano observe the strike. Cano takes his people into a secluded field to pick. Strikers descend upon them. Cano flees. That night Fredi and Angel have it out once and for all. Angel jumps Fredi in a dark stairwell. He wields a screw driver for a weapon. As the two skirmish, Jake cracks a baseball against Angels skull. The pair flee, lest Jake, the illegal one, encounter the cops. Now the two go against the migrant flow and land in the Indian River area, ready to pick the last of the grapefruit crop. They stay at the Charlton Arms, a ramshackle roadhouse run by a woman named Mabel, who has been Fredis lover for as long as he has been in the flow. The day after their arrival, the two learn that the crews have suspending picking and wont start up for a week. To earn money they get into the cat-killing business. Its an old ploykill a cat, skin it and cut off his feet. The buyers are blacks who think it is either coon; without feet they cant tell the difference. Theyll pay up to $40. Unfortunately, one night after killing two, Fredi goes home while Jake stays behind to catch one more with a dead fish as bait. What he snares instead is a skunk which bites him. The bite sickens Jake. Because he passes in and out of consciousness and runs a high fever, Fredi and Mabel think he may have contracted rabies. But Fredi insists that they keep him in the boarding house. Going to a hospital would only get him deported, assuming he lives. Thanks to Mabel, he lives. Fredi and Jake hook up with a black crew and have steady work until Fredi and one of the blacks go to a gambling house where Fredi takes everyone down in an all night game of hi-lo. With thousands in his pocket, Fredi believes he is on his way to his dreama home, not one that moves, a house that stays put. The black community is outraged at how a Latino suckered its people. A man named Crowe, a man with a dangerous posse, challenges Fredi. He loses big. And cant cover his loses. If he doesnt, Crowe and company will kill him. Now they flee to the middle of the state, a farm outside DeLand, where Jakes father and the people from his village work, cutting ferns. The two stay in a trailer in the woods. Across the way is a redneck couple, also cutters. The woman, Marie, is beautiful, blonde and white. Despite Jakes warning, Fredi befriends her. A steady user of drink and pot, Dennis, her boyfriend, tries to undermine the entire clan but only succeeds in being demoted to the weed crew, which is no more than a sad collection of day laborers. One night Dennis is at his usual haunt, The Rebel Yell, when a black man enters, looking so fierce no one dares to confront him. The black says hes looking for a "white Mexican. Dennis is more than happy to tell him all about the new arrivals, Fredi and Jake. During the day fern cutters often move from one shaded bed to another, cutting only the most mature ferns. At lunch Dennis cant find Marie where he left her. Enraged he goes home to drink and arm himself. A confrontation occurs, during which a drunken Dennis lets out that he has alerted Crowes posse to Fredis whereabouts. With the arrival of the police, Dennis is subdued. No one is harmed. Even so, Jake and Fredi are now in danger. The elders confer, agreeing to send Jake back to Mexico and Fredi to a safe place in Virginia. As the bad guys prowl the roads in search of the white Mexican, Jakes father takes his son to Atlanta to catch a bus, while Fredi and Marie drive through the night, heading north, both praying Virginia will be a home, the last stop.

Bloody Music! (A Sonata for the Creatively Misunderstood in the Modern World!)
Nicolas John
Inspirational
Bloody Music - Synopsis Bloody Music is a novel (literary fiction) reflecting the values of creativity in education, and a tongue in cheek look at the need of how to get the best out of children; the difficulties faced by those involved, and the wider picture of core modern education and the restrictions it causes. The ideas are conveyed through the family vehicle of Frank, Debbie, their kids, and their work places. Frank is a harried brow beaten Head of Music in an excellent independent school. He battles against the increasing politics of modern education, the demands of an arrogant statistics driven senior manager, the challenges of having his own growing teenage children in his own school, and the temptation of a new inspirational sexy art teacher! Debbie, his wife, runs a book shop in addition to trying to hold all the threads of her family together. Whilst fighting against her own instinct to find out too much about the sexy american journalist who keeps popping in for a chat, she also fights to keep herself focussed on their own lives. Peripheral events seem destined to distract and seduce them - frustrations and restrictions demand an outlet against the backdrop of the pressures of raising a family, within our current fully distracted world! Frank uses the arrival of a new computer to vent, and starts to write it all down. The end result is a novel - 'Bloody Music! - about a harried music teacher fighting against the onslaught of modern education! Whilst rumour, suspicion, tantrum, anarchy and awe are the catalysts for upheaval, amazement, warmth and love, their independence and strength carries the family through - just! Franks novel raises some awareness, but he himself is caught in the unexpected landslide of change. More importantly, through his writing he acquires a greater understanding of himself, and of those he loves.  The sub-plots contain the curing of Grace (the terminally ill bookshop owner) the gift of true friendship, the pride in doing something really worthwhile, and the trust we could place in our youth if we allowed them to be innovative and participant, rather than grind-stoned and burnt out. Positive change against the odds is the overriding struggle, whilst attempting to attain freedom from restriction is the central main theme. There is a cure for cancer, the voice of suppressed youth, and the run of the mill disillusioned adult all forcing their self expression to forge a better future. The novel is essentially about people and their interaction with each other - set within the structure of Sonata Form - Exposition - Development - Recapitulation - Coda, with the mood of each section a representative echo of this musical form.

Two and a half weeks
Antony James
Inspirational
Two and a half weeks A Synopsis On the 8th December 2008 my first and only son was born in Mexico and by the 25th December he had disappeared along with his Mexican mother Magdalena Sofia Huerta Loeza. This is a true story of my effort, pain and suffering at the hands of his mother to get my son back and along the way the abuse and suffering I had to put up with including death threats, being detained and incarcerated behind Mexican bars not just once but twice! With all the barriers that stood in the way of me recovering my one and only son Jayden Cristian, it wasnt going to be an easy ride. His mother registered herself as a single mother on the birth certificate before I had the opportunity to register my own names before he was so cruelly snatched from me at only two weeks and three days old. Before I even had a chance to know and love him! Mexico is today thanks largely to an ongoing drugs war, a very violent country and the fifth most corrupt country on this planet, with Mexican lawyers having an extremely bad reputation and who are just as corrupt to which later, I was to find out just how much. Such cases were prone to a little bribery, quite openly too, which didnt bode well for me at all. This is a very interesting humanistic story from the point of view that very few fathers would go through the amount of pain trouble and suffering that I have endured in order to get back their child. I have taken many personal risks too and I know that many people would be interested in this type of story which is a grippingly true account. How many fathers would go to all the lengths that I have in order to fight for their child? I strongly believe that this particular genre has great market potential with anyone that has children, loves children and hates injustice. Any one that has and loves children would enjoy this book which has passion, pain, suspense, heartache, intrigue, drama and much more making it a very compelling read. The book is now completed and is one hundred and twenty seven thousand words long. Ps. This is a true story And so the battle goes on!

Detective Chief Inspector Hinton Ampner and Detective Sergeant Jack Hughes insist that he took his own life but Michaels daughter, Kate, is adamant that this is murder. Michael may seem to have led a charmed life but, when it comes to his death, there are plenty of possible suspects: Kates step-mother, Jane Lucas; gangland boss, Frankie Molloy; ex-fighter pilot, "Polish Eddy Kretovic; computer pioneer, Brian Braeburn and fabulously famous actor, Antony Cleopatra; perhaps even Kate herself or even Bruce Taylor. Richard Hartley, junior reporter with the Sweffling and Saxmundham Herald and Free Advertiser Incorporating the Peasenhall Crow, feels as though his life has yet to begin. He and Michael Lucas had never met but their stories are set to become intertwined as Richard is kidnapped; beaten; followed; arrested; released; incredibly tired; afraid of ghosts he doesnt believe in; desperately in need of a wee and in love with Kate. Despite all this he brings his unique knowledge and skills to bear on the case and almost manages to solve it. He also comes up with an answer to the question that everyone is asking: "Who Is Bruce Taylor?

Memoirs of an Ordinary Guy
Mel RJ Smith
Inspirational
He was born in the sixties, grew up in the seventies, became a man in the eighties and threw everything away in the twenty first century. Yes, Mel Smith is just an ordinary guy. His story starts in 2012, after he foolishly let his marriage and a happy family life slip away. Now, single and alone, he lives in his one-bedded staff accommodation room, a room he has to call home. Scrunched up on his over-used, spring-laden bed, his fingers are poised, hovering over the keyboard. Mel is ready to share how he got to this stage in his life, to tell his memoirs, growing from boy to man and all that that it entailed. Along the way, he meets an assortment of characters from family, friends and lovers, to complete strangers. But, of course, no story would be complete without a baddy added to the mix and Mel certainly meets his fair share of them. Throughout his life, he has a humorous journey of discovery, disappointments and adventure. It all starts in nineteen sixty four. Melvyn, or Beanpole, as his mother would call him, is quite content using a nappy full of cabbage-flavoured shit as a cushion, while sitting in a hand-me-down swing, wearing hand-me down-clothes. Probably his sisters. Thats how he remembers his early days; his very own swinging sixties. In the hazy summer days of the seventies, as his hair becomes redder and freckles more noticeable, somehow he manages to get himself a girlfriend. The love affair is short-lived, his designer national health glasses putting a stop to that little romance. But all is not lost. Melvyn makes a new friend; Mitch, a good-looking London lad. They become the best of friends and share many adventures as the years roll by. In the eighties, and with his school days over, it is time, as a teenager, to go it alone and face the big wide world. Well, not quite alone, as Mitch tags along for a few more adventures, which include booze, women and sex and, more often than not, in that order. Between the ages of eighteen and twenty one, Mel works as a chef in a mental institute, loses his dad, meets a single mum with schizophrenia and marries her. Over a decade, he suffers the wrath of a green-eyed monster, namely, her jealousy. They are tough times. With the end of the nineties just around the corner, everything changes. Melvyn becomes Mel. No, he doesn't become a woman. He gets divorced, turns his life around and lives happily ever after as a newly-married man, well into the twenty first century. That is, until the cabbage-flavoured shit catches up with him, hits the fan head on and lands him where he is now; sad and alone on his bed and trying to dodge a wayward spring, as he types these memoirs. How did he get here? Well that's another story.

S. A. Hunt
Speculative
When Ross comes home from Afghanistan, he reels at the news that his father Ed Brigham, a famous fantasy author, has died. After the huge funeral, Ross investigates his father's death, accompanied by two of his father's fans--film student Sawyer and Florida beachcomber Noreen. Together, they discover a passage that leads them to the desolate reaches of Destin, the outlaw-infested parallel world in Ed's gunslinger novels. There they meet the Kingsmen, the warrior gunslinger caste of Destin and find themselves the target of a plot by the Muses themselves to bring the final act of humanity to a close. Inspired by the classics he grew up with such as A Wrinkle in Time and The Neverending Story, and evocative of Stephen King's fantasy-western epic The Dark Tower, the first volume of S. A. Hunt's The Outlaw King is the visionary beginning of a series spanning from modern-day Earth to the sands of an exotic parallel world, where a climactic battle will take place on the shores of consciousness...and challenge the rules of the written word itself.

Forced to lead the murder investigation into the death of her shady lieutenant, Emilia faces resentment from the other detectives as well as a blood-spattered crime scene, no witnesses, and the shadow of counterfeit ransom money. The dead lieutenant led a double life in Acapulco full of illicit sex and financial manipulation, all of which would be either red herrings or keys to the murder investigation. Missing police files, the lieutenants involvement with a past kidnapping, and a possible link to a gang working for a drug cartel further combine to make this a messy case with too many loose ends. A GAME OF MONEY AND POWER Expecting to become a target herself because of her own brush with the lieutenants counterfeit scheme, Emilia must move quickly to find the killer. But as she pieces together the lieutenant's last hours, she becomes a pawn in an ugly game of corruption, money, and power being played by the Pacific resort citys ambitious mayor and a police union strongman with questionable motives. Izzibella Beau
Action
Who I am, who Im not, and who I want to be can probably describe a large majority of teens in high school. Assumptions will constantly be made based on what you look like, who your friends are, what type of clothes you wear, your name, and anything else that has to do with your past, your familys past, or anything else that makes you who you are. Meet Ayma, Colton, Tabby, Brady, Reagan, Ash, and Kennedy. They each have their own story to tell. Many assume they know them based on their outside, but what you see is totally different from who they really are. Broken; Book One of the Assumption Series centers on Ayma and Colton. It follows them through the first half of their senior year in high school. One where life should be exciting, fun, and happy...but sadly it isnt always like that. Ayma comes from wealthy divorced parents. Her mother has made her life a living hell from the time she was born and named. Her life has been planned and designed to make her a replica of her mother; a socialite living on Bay Shore. Ayma is trying to break that mold. She wants to be nothing like her mother, but really doesnt know who or what she wants to be. She has her limited friends, but lots of nemesis, low on the social ladder, and a name that will haunt her forever. Then along comes Colton; he is what everyone wants or wants to be like. Colton is the opposite of Ayma, hes not rich, has a supportive family, tons of people who want to be his friend, but Colton feels he is damaged at best. He has a past, one that includes time in jail. Ayma and Colton seem to balance each other out, they arent supposed to be together, they are complete opposites, but yet the attraction is one they cant fight for long...will his past catch up and tear them apart or will they be able to pull through all the obstacles that were created to break them. Broken is how both of them feel. Can they help each other to fix the damaged pieces of their lives or will unforeseen circumstances keep their lives forever shattered.
